How the Itten circle works

The primary colors are blue, yellow and red. They are in the center of the circle and are considered the main ones. If you mix them, you can get any shades available to the human eye.

Secondary colors are green, orange and purple. Obtained by mixing primary colors. For example, combining yellow and red makes orange, and blue and red make purple.

Tertiary colors. They are obtained by mixing the primary and secondary colors that are adjacent in the diagram. For example, yellow and green make yellow-green, yellow and orange make yellow-orange.

As a result, there are 12 colors in the outer circle: three primary, three secondary and six tertiary.

The benefits of the circle when creating fashionable images

The ability to correctly combine tones is at all times a necessary base for a person who wants to look stylish everywhere. How to achieve this and where to find inspiration for bold color combinations? The answer is obvious - using a color palette of color combinations. A successful harmonious combination simply works wonders!

Competently composed color combinations in the wardrobe always attract the eye and leave a sense of harmony.

When choosing elements of clothing, like makeup, the basic criterion is often the color wheel of a combination of colors (we will tell you how to use it below). This tool helps to achieve unique combinations in a couple of minutes.

The color wheel helps to correctly work with shades even without the help of a designer.

What are the practical benefits

Even the great Coco Chanel once said that the most successful color is the one that best suits you. It is difficult to express it more competently, but it is not always easy to follow this principle.

In the wardrobe of every fashionista there are things of different tones, it is not always easy to combine them with each other. Having delved into the essence of the harmony of colors, you can easily select the shades that are most suitable for the occasion.

Simple color schemes make it easy to combine all the items in your wardrobe.

It is important to study the nuances of color combinations, each time getting a unique harmonious bow and presenting yourself in a winning light. All kinds of shades with the right interaction always give luxurious color combinations.

The ability to combine different shades with each other will make the wardrobe much richer and brighter.

Understanding how to use the Eaton circle will help you figure out how to combine different tones with each other, easily choosing successful wardrobe combinations.

Green color

The most calm and natural color. Green on a subconscious level takes us to nature, where there is the energy of living plants that charge us, allow us to relax and unwind. Different shades and saturation of this color make it possible to choose what the character of the interior will be. Too dark emerald heavy tones should be used in doses. Lighter ones are recommended to be used in tandem with a woody texture.

Red color

Contradictory color. Not suitable for everyone. It is generally accepted that this is the color of passion and aggression. But for some, it is just bright and invigorating. The only thing that can be said for sure is that in large quantities it tires and depresses, awakens the appetite and irritates the nervous system. It will look great in commercial spaces. In a hotel room, for example. For some time to live in such a color scheme is a good psychological shake-up. But for the home, you should limit yourself to small elements or use an accent wall. At the same time, it is necessary to correctly balance it with neutral colors.

The psychological impact of colors and shades

Each color has its own emotional connotation. People perceive all shades very subtly. The subconscious mind chooses the colors it likes and the ones it doesn't like. Psychologically, even your favorite tones that you use in clothes or accessories can be oppressive in the interior. Especially if you use them in large quantities. Therefore, consider the psychological aspect of color when planning the color scheme of your home interior.

monochrome scheme

The monochrome scheme is most likely familiar to you for a long time. To do this, take three colors that are next to each other. They are subspecies and variations of each other. Always a win-win.

Design experiments with the color wheel

Designers are always looking for new ideas, prove hitherto unknown fashionable theorems and expand a number of axioms, offering their bold experiments, which, however, do not contradict color logic. Apply their ideas and recommendations, they will definitely help you find the right solution in the color of each bow. We offer some helpful tips:

  • with red as the main one, choose delicate pink, pure white and neutral tones in addition;
  • it is desirable to dilute yellow with saturation; bright red and black colors are ideal for this;
  • choose nude for green with a cold undertone;
  • brown with red - a new fashionable chip;
  • turquoise goes well with amber-colored things;
  • coral can be diluted with neutral gray-pearl for spice.

Automatic Palette Selection Tools

You can choose a combination of specific shades on the expanded color wheel. It allows you to accurately set the tone, saturation, brightness and find the right colors using Itten's circle schemes.

Adobe also has a handy tool. It is based on the same combination rules, but allows you to quickly edit the parameters of each color in the palette and see how the harmonious gamut changes from this.

Basic rules for color combinations

There are many options for combining wardrobe. If we are talking about everyday or business bow, it is recommended to take a dark tone as a basis. To the basic items of a ladies' or men's suit (trousers or skirts), choose light details.

In drawing up color ensembles, cases should be avoided when the clothes in their appearance resemble “bright Petrushka”. If you want to achieve contrast, give up equal proportions of tones. In color blocking, give preference to one bright tone, combining it with inexpressive ones - and you will be irresistible.

Examples of successful stylistic combinations based on pastel and light shades.

Screaming shades balance neutral. Please note that not all neutral colors can be used in combination with flashy ones. For example, stylists do not recommend choosing a bright tone for black, because it is already self-sufficient and saturated.

When choosing something neutral, you can safely use three wardrobe items of the same color, and no more. Deciding to make your image bright, take just one bright and a couple of neutral tones.

In a bright bow, the main thing is not to overdo it, it is better to limit yourself to one or several notes.

Gray, as well as delicate beige gamma, favorably sets off your appearance. This successful combination, according to stylists, brings notes of softness to any look. Having caught the essence of how to combine colors on the color wheel, you will be on top!

The beige gamma perfectly sets off the appearance, emphasizing all its advantages.

Compatibility table

Such a table is a convenient and easy tool for beginners. It spells out the colors and indicates what shades they are combined with. Paired with Itten's color wheel, it works amazingly. There is no need to even doubt it. You choose the color you like, the table suggests a harmonious combination, and on the circle you immediately look at the desired shades and decide whether you like this combination or not.

triad scheme

This scheme involves the use of three colors. They are at the corners of an equilateral triangle. Use juicy shades or pastel and delicate ones. Colors will be combined in any case, but the interior with different tonality and contrast will look different.

Color matching wheel device

The palette of colors in the circle is designed intricately and at the same time simply. As a result, the combination of all correctly selected tones looks harmonious. For all the time, many different variations of a single base have been created, however, the most popular version of them is a circle consisting of twelve colors.

  • primary colors - the foundation consists of only three tones (scarlet, yellow and blue);
  • secondary colors, they are obtained by mixing from a palette of two main ones;
  • tertiary colors arise by mixing colors from the primary and secondary circle or two secondary shades.

However, as can be seen from the photo of Itten's circle, it is not limited to only twelve tones, because behind each of the shades there is a huge range of different variations. They are obtained by adding traditional white and black. All received colors change their brightness and degree of saturation. So the number of different kinds of combinations is simply impossible to imagine.

Color magic or gradient effect in the interior

The gradient in the interior is a modern solution used to decorate different living spaces. It is based on a smooth transition from dark to light tone. This method can be used in the design of various interior details.

The gradient effect helps bring freshness and excitement into the room. Usually designers use different shades of blue, as it gives a beautiful combination of colors in the interior.

gradient effect

Experts recommend making the transition in such a way that a darker tone is near the floor, and a lighter one near the ceiling, this will visually enlarge the room.

Color combination in the kitchen

For the kitchen, it is best to choose warm colors. For example, orange, yellow and red - they improve mood and improve appetite. They can be used as an accent on one of the walls, an apron, as well as on appliances, furniture and accessories. Neutral white, beige, gray and black work well as companions for such bright, cheerful shades.

If the kitchen windows face south, it is better to refuse too warm tones, as they increase the feeling of heat and stuffiness. Pay attention to the no less winning combination of brown and green. It creates a cozy atmosphere and makes us a little closer to nature.

Combination rules for different styles

There is a golden rule: in order for your wardrobe to absolutely match your condition, you need to rely on your tastes and preferences.

But at the same time, there are a couple of basic rules that are very desirable to follow when choosing shades of clothing for a particular occasion.

Their observance will help not only look great and be known as a fashionista, but also competently draw up a wardrobe so that things are interchangeable. The correct arrangement of colors will help you create dozens of bows from several items, changing just one thing in the ensemble.

business images

A business wardrobe should be calm, strict and restrained, but in no case should you create boring and faceless sets, since it is in these clothes that you spend most of your time. The basis of such a wardrobe is neutral beige, white and dark colors (blue, black, dark green, deep gray). They are perfectly combined with each other in any variation. That is, 4 things in these shades will allow you to get from 16 different images.

Basic color set for a business wardrobe.

When composing business sets, it is advisable to avoid flashy bright colors. This goes beyond business etiquette. But muted and pastel colors can be safely combined with the basic dark colors of a business wardrobe. Evening bows

An evening out has almost no restrictions on the choice of the main color. Both dark and bright shades and warm and cold are appropriate here. Its main task is to stand out from the crowd in a bright and unforgettable way, in a good way.

The classics of evening dress is pure black, red. However, it is not forbidden to choose bright things that catch the eye. Don't be afraid of the boldest colors. However, competently “repay” them with neutral or black accessories. The ideal formula for an evening out is one shade-star and several additional ones that precisely emphasize and enrich the main color.

There are almost no color restrictions in the evening wardrobe, you can use any shade.

However, it is worth remembering that some parties, receptions and other events are distinguished by the presence of a voiced or unspoken dress code.

Everyday wardrobe

For everyday wardrobe, choose brown, blue, rich green shades. Dilute them with more pastel or bright accents. But it is better to exclude the usual white and black, they are impractical.

Color set for everyday wardrobe.

For sports, all bright colors have recently been welcomed, they charge with energy and positive, the desire to act. However, black and white classics also do not go out of fashion. But it is worth noting that, despite its popularity, white is the most impractical in terms of sports. So, when choosing it, be prepared for frequent changes in training clothes.

The variety of shades in a sports wardrobe is not limited to black, blue and white.
